Reif Estate's Pre-Release Tasting of Kiln Dried Wines - Reif Estate Winery

Date: Mar 03/11, Thu     Time: 04:30:00-06:30:00     Style: Drop-In

Reif Estate's Pre-Release Tasting of Kiln Dried Wines - Co-hosted by Reif Estate Winery and the Ontario Wine Society (OWS), FWR members were also able to enjoy this very interesting event. Reif Winemaker Roberto DiDomenico was on hand to present a themed tasting showcasing wines produced from grapes dried in the kilns, including their first ever appassimento style wine. The wines were complimented by a wonderful selection of Ontario artisan cheeses and Reif's kiln dried Niagara Raisins recently featured in a February issue of Maclean’s magazine.

Wines sampled included:

1. The Magician (2009)
2. First Growth TBA Riesling (2009)
3. A recioto style red that is still in barrel
4. A sweet Chardonnay (2008)

The Magician (2009) is Reif's first appassimneto style wine, and a blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Pinot. The release price is to be $19.95 a bottle, but it was offered at $18.00/bottle at this pre-release tasting. The Reisling is a First Growth Totally Botrytis Affected (TBA) Riesling and the equivalent of a German style Trockenbeerenauslese. The price of $50/200ml bottle was reduced to $40/bottle at this pre-release tasting. The 2008 Chardonnay is sweet because the sugars were so high when the grapes were picked and a significant amount of residual sugar remained. A sweet Chardonnay sounds weird ... but it tasted great!!
