Albillo Mayor, the ancient white grape variety of Ribera del Duero, historically used to co-ferment with Tempranillo in the region’s red wines, has recently been turning heads with single-variety wines. The 2023 Jaros is an excellent example, with layers of flavour, outstanding balance, and a notably long finish. Its bouquet is charged with toasty oak, apple, citrus, mineral and hay aromas, followed by notes of peach, lime, vanilla and spice on the palate. This youthful wine is ready to drink but will continue to evolve in the cellar through 2028. It makes a delightful pairing for seared scallops, cheesy French onion soup or chicken cordon bleu. Louise Wilson Cormier, Master of Wine – November 2024.

Located in Pesquera de Duero, one kilometer from the Duero River on its north bank, winemaker Beatriz Arranz crafts this enticing Ribera del Duero from 100% estate-grown Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). With a deep ruby/purple hue and a generous bouquet, this classic wine offers blackberry, raspberry and plum aromas supported by hints of toasty oak spice and mocha. Notes of raspberry, strawberry and currant come to the forefront on the palate, offset by an appealing dash of dried herb. Both the judicious oak and the firm fine tannins are in harmony, creating an ideal drinking window of 2025 – 2030. A treat with a bone-in rib eye and sauteed mushrooms. Super Tuscan wines are the flagships of a winery’s portfolio and are often made with grape varieties that are outside of the traditional recipe for Chianti. Monte Chiaro’s 2019 Arteliquida is a fine example, made from 100% Malvasia Nera, also known as the Tuscan Tempranillo. The bouquet is fruity, floral and savoury with hints of plum, violet, leather and anise. Smooth, supportive tannins and balanced acidity frame its mid-weight body. Plum and black cherry flavours take center stage, supported by hints of dried herb and cured meat. This developing wine will continue to shine through 2028. Pair with Korean BBQ ribs or lamb lollipops. Louise Wilson Cormier Master of Wine – June 2025
