WHAT IS A MASTER OF WINE?
A Master of Wine, or MW, is a beverage industry professional with exceptional wine business expertise. To become a member of the Institute of Master of Wine, each candidate must pass a rigorous exam as well as adhere to a code of conduct. The exam, which was first written in 1953, tests the candidate’s knowledge of wine theory, their tasting ability and requires the completion of an original research paper. There are currently 414 Masters of Wine based in 31 countries around the world. Louise is one of ten Masters of Wine in Canada and one of four in Ontario.

SHOWCASING

Osvaldo Barberis Dogliani DOCG AVRI 2021 - Dogliani DOCG, Italy
Osvaldo Barberis considers his Dogliani DOCG “Avari” the most distinctive wine in his cellar. It is certified organic and unfiltered, like all of the wines he produces from his family’s 11 hectares of vines. The “Avari,” named for its early bottling in April, is also made with no sulphites added, allowing for optimal expression of terroir and flavour. Its bouquet intrigues with a fragrance of dark cherry, rose petal and mint. This cool berry profile continues to weave through on the palate with notes of blueberry, cherry and plum. There is good structure to this wine with svelte tannins and fresh acidity in harmony with the fruit. If you are not yet familiar with Piedmont’s Dolchetto grape, Osvaldo Barberis provides an excellent introduction. Drink 2024-2028.

Osvaldo Barberis Langhe Barbera “Brichat” 2022 - Langhe DOC, Italy
If you enjoy Cru Beaujolais, the Osvaldo Barberis Langhe Barbera is one to try. This energetic mid-weight wine is scented with aromas of cherry, raspberry, cranberry and blueberry that extend through the palate to the finish. Supple, lightweight tannin and bright acidity perfectly balance its juicy core. Looking for a red wine to pair with your favourite fish recipe? Here it is. Serve slightly chilled to accentuate its fruity style. Enjoy now through 2027.

Nizza Silvano Barbera d'Alba DOC 2022 - Barbera d'Alba DOC, Italy
This smooth operator captivates with a satisfying depth of fruit wrapped in silky, sleek tannins. The bouquet of earthy grilled cherry transforms into bright fruit flavours of cherry, cranberry and red currant. A beautifully balanced wine that signs off with a hint of smokiness on the finish. Enjoy over the next 4 years.

Zoppi Cristina Grignolino d'Asti DOC 2021 - Grignolino d'Asti DOC, Italy
Underlying the pale garnet robe of Zoppi Cristina’s organic Grignolino is an abundance of aroma and flavour. The bouquet is fruity and savoury, scented with notes of strawberry, leather and tea. Fine, firm tannin and bright acidity balance the red berry fruit core, leading to a long, memorable finish. Enjoy over the next 5 years as an earlier drinking alternative to Nebbiolo.

Canta Rainette Elegance Chardonnay 2022 - I.G.P Méditerranée, France
While Chardonnay is not commonly grown in Provence, the 2022 Canta Rainette Elegance shows the potential for high-quality expressions in the region. Its refined bouquet is scented with the fragrance of lemon, apples and buttery pastry. Mouth-filling citrus and orchard fruit notes are wrapped in toasty oak flavours on the palate. This core transitions into a delightful finish woven with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. This luxurious French Chardonnay could easily be mistaken for top Napa examples. It’s a perfect match for lobster drizzled with garlic lemon butter. Enjoy through to 2028.

Prediomagno Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG 2021 - Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG, Italy
An exceptional wine made from the rare Ruchè variety of Castagnole Monferrato in Italy’s Piedmont region. Its bouquet is perfumed with the scent of rose, cherry, mocha and mint. The palate is equally complex, with an ample red berry fruit foundation kissed with notes of menthol, tea and black pepper. Moderate, well-polished tannins and fresh acidity provide an elegant structure as the wine tapers into a memorable length. Pair with flavourful dishes such as osso bucco or lamb chops with mint dressing. Drink 2024-2026.
